Say hello again to “better-for-you” fast food, Main Street America.

A Boston-based, fast-casual chain that closed its standalone locations in recent years has redesigned its restaurant prototype and plans to open the first new franchise in the greater Boston area by early 2016, a press release announced yesterday.

UFood Grill filed for bankruptcy in 2012, but it didn’t fold. Though it closed its original shop in Watertown and one in Fenway, the restaurants are still around in two terminals at Logan Airport, as well as on military bases, college campuses, and other non-traditional locations around the country. “Our goal now is to take what has worked so well with food service operators and put UFood Grill on Main Street across America,” the press release says.

The new format is about 1,800 square feet, but the company notes it is a flexible design and can fit into a larger, smaller, and oddly-shaped spaces. UFood is on the hunt for experienced restaurateurs and franchise operators for future investments; it hopes to open 100 new locations around the country over the next four years.

UFood Grill offers a “better-for-you” fast-food menu, including build-your-own grain bowls, grass-fed sirloin burgers, grilled tips and skewers; wraps, panini, and sides including seasoned “unfries.” The restaurants don’t fry anything; everything is baked, grilled, or steamed.
